Defining Long Tail Keywords for SEO

Marketing Professionals use long tail keywords when they want their web page to come up for a very refined search. Similarly, a searcher types a long tail keyword when he wants the search engine to retrieve very specific results. These keywords are highly precise and drive very little traffic towards the website. It is quality traffic however which leads to more conversions as compared to normal keywords.

The core purpose of using long tail keywords from the publisher end is to access a market that might be smaller in sample than the other potentially huge markets, but is equally beneficial in terms of conversions. Another reason for selecting long tail keywords is that the publisher has to pay less for the clicks it generates in PPC campaigns. When using other paid inclusion methods, publishers always get benefits from long tail keywords because there are very few people bidding on them.

After many trials, visitors use long tail keywords when they can’t find anything relevant in the search results. For example, when a person is searching for ‘blue heel hush puppies shoes,’ it makes more sense to type all of these words into the search phrase. Instead, when a person types only ‘blue heels.’ ‘hush puppies shoes’ or ‘hush puppies heels,’ he is less likely to get relevant results.

Working with long tail keywords means that a Marketing Professional should develop a full understanding of what they are and how to use them. It is also useless to select long tail keywords without looking for their search volume. Also remember the fact that considering a long tail keyword may make it popular over time and will consequently increase the bidding price for it.

Last but not least, you should keep in mind that long tail keywords are not the only key to success and that conversion or sales do not always come with targeted traffic, but they do create opportunities for them.
